The Colorado Springs Marriott is USAFA Football Headquarters again this fall. If you have not had the opportunity to enjoy the pagentry of this local venue, now is your chance.

For a limited time (and on a limited number of rooms) the Colorado Springs Marriott is offering all USAFA fans and supporters an unbelievable rate of $99/nt.

Reservations can be made by phone 24 hours a day by calling the 1-800-932-2151 Reservations office. Please mention you are attending the "USAFA Booster Club" and which weekend you will be attending.

We have also included some Reservation web links to assist with the booking process. Simply click any of the links belowand you will be directed to the property's home page with our code already entered in the appropriate field. All you need to do is enter your arrival date to begin the reservation process.

To avoid any availability issues, please make reservations as soon as you know you will be coming. Cutoff is about 3-4 weeks prior to each game for these rates. More importantly, the Marriott will also be hosting several reunion classes and the hotel will be sold out most of these weekends.

1 navy riding in on a big win, Who MaKes the BiG PlaYs? Navy has had the upper hand in this category for several years. In last season’s 31-20 victory over Air Force, the Midshipmen were outgained, 474-381. But they scored on touchdown runs of 78 and 37 yards, completed a 53-yard pass that set up another score and went 3 for 3 on fourth-down conversions. In 2006, Navy scored on a 37-yard fumble recovery. And in 2005, the Midshipmen’s second-half touchdowns came on a 61-yard pass and a 40-yard run. Air Force’s defense has come up with big plays this season, but its offense has had only a handful and must create more Saturday.

2 the BYe WeeK factor. After its loss to Utah on Sept. 20, Air Force had a bye, which gave the Falcons two weeks to recover physically and prepare for Navy’s triple-option offense. Navy, meanwhile, will be playing its second straight road game Saturday — and it will be at altitude. But while the Midshipmen won’t be as rested as the Falcons, they have momentum after beating Rutgers and then upsetting previously unbeaten and then-No. 16 Wake Forest last Saturday. Will Air Force not be as sharp after two weeks off?

3 NaVY QuarterBacK KaiPo-Noa KaheaKu-eNhada The talented senior quarterback left last Saturday’s game against Wake Forest late in the first half after aggravating a hamstring injury that kept him out of the first two games. Kaheaku-Enhada didn’t return, and the Midshipmen struggled to move the ball with reserve quarterback Jarod Bryant. Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo called Kaheaku-Enhada “questionable to probable” early in the week, and it will be a significant blow to the Midshipmen if he cannot play or play effectively. They lost to Ball State without him and fell to Duke when he did not play in the second half.

Air Force opens the 2008 season, its 53rd season of varsity football, by hosting Southern Utah on Saturday, Aug. 30, at noon in Falcon Stadium. The Falcons enter their second season with Troy Calhoun as head coach. Air Force puts an undefeated home record (6-0) in the Calhoun era on the line when SUU comes to town.

Air Force is undefeated against teams from the Football Championship Subdivision, formerally known as Division I-AA. The Falcons defeated South Carolina State, 34-3, in the season opener last year. Air Force is 12-0 all-time vs. teams from the FCS.

AFA football players hard to round up during summer

Air Force senior quarterback Shea Smith surveyed the players around him and knew he had to call an audible.

"Sai," he said, turning to sophomore tailback Savier Stephens. "You mind playing some cornerback?"

It was Tuesday afternoon on the practice fields behind the Falcon Athletic Center, and a group of Air Force football players had gathered to run seven-on-seven passing drills.
One problem: They had only 11 players.

While most big-time Division I programs have nearly all their scholarship players on campus throughout the offseason, Air Force players are spread out across the globe during the three three-week periods that divide the academy summer.

So on Tuesday, like a bunch of kids at a park using "ghost runners" to make a baseball game work, the Falcons improvised. Stephens lined up at cornerback. Sophomore backup quarterback Will McAngus lined up at receiver. Senior tight end Keith Madsen, when he wasn't at his normal position, snapped the ball to Smith or junior quarterback Eric Herbort. And just one half of the field was used at a time.

"We make it work," Madsen said.
And things are a lot easier now with both Smith and Herbort - the leading candidates to replace graduated four-year starting quarterback Shaun Carney - at the academy. During the first period of summer, there were no quarterbacks at the academy, so seven-on-sevens were just about impossible.

"We're different from anywhere else," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said. "Anywhere else you have them there all summer and they're doing all their workouts and all their skill development and they're watching tape. Where at our place ... they're all over the world right now."Cadets get one period of leave each summer and spend the other two periods in a variety of ways. Most report to an Air Force base for at least one period. Some go through flight training. And some spend one or more periods on campus working basic training or taking a class.

But even those on campus have widely varied schedules. Strength and conditioning coach Matt McGettigan runs morning and afternoon conditioning sessions four days a week, and some players stationed on campus can't make either. Senior tackle Keith Williams, for instance, began his lifting and movement workout Tuesday evening by himself when the afternoon group was almost finished.

1. AFA took 9 boxers to the national tournament April 10-12, 2008. The event was hosted at the new Reno Ballroom with CBS Sports TV on board providing a tape delay of the action. Look for the event to air in your area soon. Heading out of the west regional qualifier AFA was looking good with nine individual champs and two runner ups. The following week the Falcons Boyce Loomis 185lbs was diagnosed with mono and was unable to participate. 175lb Lucas Gagliardi was not allowed to compete for medical reasons. The Falcons boxed hard and did extremely well; I was very proud of the effort and desire to win. The team was focused, unified and we were physically peaking at the correct time.

2. In the quarterfinal round of competition AFA went 2 wins and 3 losses.

9. A special thanks to all the alumni and volunteer officials who

Erwin Vargas who is separating from the Air Force and moving
to Las Vegas to be with his new bride Courtney. Coach Vargas
has been on board since November of 2005. He will be replaced

The event at the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame was a wonderful event last night. Chad Hall was honored as Colorado College male athlete of the year. Citations were read for the accomplishments of Eric Ehn and Troy Calhoun.

I am working on getting a copy of his induction (by former CU Coach Bill McCartney) to be able to post on youTube. Fisher's speech was the last one given, and he brought down the house with his ability to transfer his passion and command to those of us lucky enough to be there.

The Air Force Academy Boxing Team competed in the west regional qualifier on 27, 28 and 29 March at Santa Clara University California. The Falcons performed superbly qualifying all 11 members of the team for the National Tournament. The Falcons won 9 regional titles and 2 runner-ups en route to capturing its 28th regional team championship. The University of Nevada Reno, UNLV, San Jose State, University of San Francisco, Cal Berkeley, and host Santa Clara University rounded out the competition in the west. The young and talented Academy team showed their heart and conditioning as they took the fight to their opponents. The high altitude (7,258 ft) training was obvious as the Falcons were able to bring six minutes of pressure and effective aggression. 156 lb Regional Champion Daryn Nelson was awarded the boxer of the tournament by the officials for the higher weight classes. Nelson received a bye in the quarter finals, defeated a game and gritty Santa Clara opponent in the semi-finals, and unseeded the defending national champion from the University of Nevada Reno, Ryan Kotey. Nelson used effective combinations and brought a determination and will to win to the ring. The Air Force Academy 112 lb regional champion, Dean Chuva, showed tremendous heart and courage having to come from behind to win a close 3-2 decision over the talented and experienced Jason Morris of UNLV. Morris controlled round 1 and bloodied Chuva’s nose early in round 2 which warranted a mandatory 8-count from the referee. This seemed to motivate Chuva who immediately upped the tempo and pace to take charge in the second part of round 2. Chuva continued his relentless attack issuing 2 standing 8-counts and had Morris pinned on the ropes when the final bell rang. Chuva’s effort kick started his fellow teammates and provided the motivation and momentum throughout the final matches. The Falcons are in action at the NCBA National Competition next week on 10, 11, and 12 April at Reno Nevada. Thanks for all your help and support.

Wing Open Season Kicks Off Thursday for Air Force Boxing

This is the 50th year of Wing Open action at the Academy.

Feb. 5, 2008

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - An exciting month of Academy boxing action kicks off on Thursday (Feb. 7), as Air Force opens competition for the 50th Wing Open Tournament. Three preliminary bouts will be contested in the Cadet Gym's Upper Boxing Room, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

All three bouts will be in the 156-pound weight class. Senior Ryan Price will face freshman Nick Holland, while freshman Martynas Smitas will toe the line with sophomore John Doeseckle. Senior Daryn Nelson will wrap up the evening against freshman Cameron Carter.

The Wing Open, which began in 1958 with just four bouts, has grown into one of the most anticipated events on the Academy calendar. Proving how fierce competition during the Wing Open Championships is, over the past 49 years, only 11 Falcons have claimed four consecutive Wing Open titles.

The champions of the Wing Open will form the core of the team that will represent the Academy in national competition. The weight divisions begin at 112 pounds and continue through 125, 132, 139, 147, 156, 165, 175, 185, 195 and heavyweight. Although the championship is a culmination of a year of hard work and dedication for the winning boxers, it is also the start of a second season of competition. The 12 Wing Open victors, or "The Dirty Dozen", form the nucleus of the Academy team that will compete at the regional and national meets.

The winners will advance to the quarterfinal round of competition on Thursday, Feb. 14. The quarterfinal and semifinal (Feb. 20) bouts will whittle down the field to the final 24 contenders that will take to the ring in Clune Arena on March 2.

The Falcons had a tough weekend in Reno where AFA Boxers lost some close bouts to Nevada. The hometown Nevada boxers were able squeak out some razor thin decisions along the course of the night. AFA boxers all came to fight and left everything in the ring despite a hostile Nevada crowd that packed into the El Dorado Hotel ballroom. Please congratulate C1C Daryn Nelson who was named the boxer of the week. Daryn soundly boxed Nevada’s defending national champion and throughout the course of the bout took charge of the action pushing the attack over the course of the three rounds scoring many points with his excellent ring presence and generalship. The Falcons will be in action this Thursday February 7, 2008 for the Wing Open Tournament preliminary bouts.

Spetman to be named FSU's AD

Florida State will try to fly among the elite athletic programs again under retired Col. Randy Spetman.

The Utah State athletic director who also held that position for nearly nine years at the United States Air Force Academy will be announced as Dave Hart's replacement during a Monday morning news conference.

Spetman, 55 and a graduate of the Air Force Academy, surfaced as the leading candidate out of a search coordinated between national consultant Chuck Neinas and FSU President T.K. Wetherell.

This was not Spetman's first try to become the head of an athletic department in this state. He was a candidate but passed over by South Florida in 2004, when he was pushed by Neinas as a candidate. Spetman, during that same spring, also did not get the same position at East Carolina University. He was later hired by Utah State.

Spetman explained to the FSU search commitee how he was passed by those two schools, a concern among some FSU fans as it became apparent Spetman would be FSU's next director.
"I actually thought I had the job (at USF) to find out that I did not get it," Spetman said. "One of the concerns was from the donor base down there that I was too recently out of the Air Force and I would run it like a military organization. And could I fundraise?

"I was actually verbally hired to be the athletics director (at ECU) from a new president who was not on campus yet," Spetman added. "When (he arrived) he found out that a donor, there again, was very concerned with my fundraising ability and they opted not to take the chance."
Fundraising is not a primary responsibility for FSU's director of athletics and Spetman, in the view of several committee members, dispelled concerns about his running FSU's program like a military organization.

"To work in athletics for many, many years and you look to those programs the you look up to, want to emulate and this is one of the premier ones," Spetman told the search committee last week. "This is a great opportunity for me in light of what I would want to be in life."

The son of a banker, farmer and World War II veteran, Spetman's edcuational resume includes an engineering degree from the Air Force Academy, where he played football after first being placed in the academy's preparatory school because the English score in his standard achievement test was low. There, Spetman said, he learned how to study and went on to start at defensive end and earn a master's degree in management and supervision from Central Michigan. He also earned a master's degree in national security strategy from the National War Academy.

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. -Three Air Force Falcons were honored by the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame for their accomplishments in 2007. Tailback/wide receiver Chad Hall was named the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Male Athlete of the Year. The CSHOF Selection Committee also awarded a special citation to hockey player Eric Ehn and football coach Troy Calhoun.
Hall will be honored at the CSHOF Banquet, April 8, at the Denver Marriott City Center Hotel along with the newest Colorado Sports Hall of Fame inductees of Fisher DeBerry, Dow Finsterwald, Pierre Lacroix, Bill Noxon, Frank Shorter and the late Starr Yelland. Tickets for the banquet are $150 each and are available by contacting the CSHOF office at Invesco Field at Mile High or by telephoning 720/258-3535.

Hall established himself as one of the best players in college football this past season as he was named the Mountain West Conference's offensive player of the year. He led the Falcons in rushing yards (1,478), receiving yards (524), receptions (50), rushing touchdowns (15), all-purpose yards (2,683), punt returns (12.6 yards per return) and kickoff returns (23.0 yards per return). He was the only player in the nation to lead his team in rushing and receiving yards. Hall also earned third-team All-America honors from Rivals.com and was a second-team All-American by Sports Illustrated (SI.com).

Ehn became the most decorated Air Force hockey player ever at the conclusion of the 2006-07 season. He became Air Force's first-ever hockey All-American, earning first-team honors by two major hockey publications and second-team honors from the coaches. He was also one of three finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Memorial Trophy, given annually to the top collegiate player in the nation. He is the first service academy player ever to be among the final three. After leading the nation in scoring for the majority of the season, he finished second in the nation with 64 points (20-40-64). The Atlantic Hockey Association player of the year set a new league record for points in conference games. He also helped lead Air Force to its first ever conference championship and first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

In his first season at Air Force, Calhoun led the Falcons to a berth in the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl, a 9-4 overall record and a 6-2 mark for second place in the Mountain West Conference. A 1989 Academy grad, Calhoun and the Falcons completed a five-game turnaround this season (AFA was 4-8 last season). The turnaround was the second largest in school history and largest since 1957-58 (six games). It was also the largest in the nation this season by a first-year head coach. Air Force's nine wins are the most since 2002 and the team's six conference wins are the most ever in the Mountain West Conference for Air Force.

we have 60 rooms reserved at the Marriott Hotel on the Magnificent Mile on Michigan Avenue in the heart of the Chicago Loop

Rooms are $219/nite. Chicago is hosting the AMIA Convention from the 10-14th and the rack rate at the Marriott is $389/nite for the weekend. We tried calling others but this convention is taking up approximately 37,000 rooms. So if you are interested, please let me know at michaeljensen@remax.net

We will have a minimum of 2 busses leaving the Marriott at 8 am on Saturday morning and returning after the game in South Bend. Food and drink will be served. Cost is $49/pp

Discount Airfare for Parents Weekend and all football games

Once again the Quarterback Club of Colorado Springs has arranged discount airfare for Air Force football fans (and basketball fans).

This is open to everyone, so please pass the word.

10% discount on whatever the fare is you chose. Here are the procedures - a little different than in the past.

Go to http://www.flyfrontier.com/

The home page has a Flight Finder section - with a Search More Options tab, click it.

There is a section to type your flight request, at the bottom there is a box Meeting id.

In that box put the code for the "Game" you want. It will reduce the fare your chose by 10%.

Travel can be 3 days before and up to 3 days after the game. For the basketball tournament that means 3 days before the 1st game (9-1-7) and 3 days after the last game (9-3-7). For the home football opener that would mean travel to Denver as early as August 29th and return as late as Sept 4th.

Game codes: For Home football games the Id is 87GA0U.

For Away football games the id is 6MM86L.

For Basketball Canadian tournament the id is 9FWC5M
